Seven weeks of warning before the smallest US wheat crop since 1965
How Helios AI flagged Kansas at its lowest rating in the season's first week and held it for 21 weeks, giving buyers seven weeks of warning before USDA's June forecast and time to cover before US wheat export prices rose 24.6%.
Drought does its damage to the US Southern Plains in April and May. It becomes a number the market trusts when USDA publishes in June, and it reaches the price only when traders act on that number, which can take weeks longer. A buyer who waits for all three steps pays for the same damage twice, once in a short crop and again in the cost of covering late. The value is in how early you can act with confidence.
In the first weekly snapshot of the 2026 season, on 26 April, Helios AI rated Kansas, the largest producing state at 18% of the national crop, at its lowest band, and held it there across all 21 consecutive weekly assessments through harvest without a single upgrade. That gave a buyer seven weeks of warning before USDA put the winter wheat crop at 1.03 billion bushels in June, down 26.5% and the smallest since 1965. The market moved last: US wheat export prices averaged $274 per tonne the week Helios AI escalated the national rating and reached $340 by 31 August, with all 64 published US wheat export series rising. A rating set early and held is what gives a procurement team a defensible position to take to a committee, weeks before the crop report everyone else is waiting on.
